Which Backrooms Movie Is This?

This guide covers A24’s feature film directed by Kane Parsons, the filmmaker behind the Backrooms YouTube series. The Los Angeles Times’ film preview identifies Parsons and the A24 production.

The distinction matters because The Backrooms also refers to a broader internet-horror concept and numerous online videos. A release date attached to an individual short, fan film, or YouTube upload isn’t necessarily connected to the A24 movie.

The underlying concept centers on unsettling, seemingly endless interior spaces—the familiar-looking rooms and corridors that become disturbing when they appear empty, disconnected, or impossible to escape. That background helps explain the title without revealing the feature’s plot.

When Can You Watch Backrooms at Home?

There are two separate home-viewing options to distinguish: paying to rent or buy the movie digitally, and watching it through a streaming subscription.

Digital rental and purchase: July 14, 2026

UPI reported July 14, 2026, as the film’s video-on-demand release date.

A digital release generally means you pay for the individual movie rather than access it through an existing subscription. Rental prices, purchase prices, supported devices, and viewing windows depend on the retailer, so check the listing before paying.

This date should not be confused with the HBO Max release: a movie can be available to rent or buy before it joins a subscription catalog.

HBO Max streaming: September 25, 2026

Polygon reported that Backrooms would begin streaming on HBO Max on September 25, 2026.

That is the relevant date if you’re specifically asking when the film reaches subscription streaming. However, it shouldn’t be read as a guarantee of availability in every HBO Max market. Check your local catalog and subscription terms before signing up solely to watch it.

Why Might You See a Different Release Date?

Movie listings can refer to different stages of a release. A premiere is an event screening; a theatrical release is when the film opens commercially in a particular market. Digital rental, digital purchase, and subscription streaming are later—and separate—distribution windows.

For Backrooms, the most useful distinction is therefore where and how you want to watch:

  • U.S. cinema release: May 29, 2026.
  • Paid digital home viewing: July 14, 2026, as reported by UPI.
  • HBO Max streaming: September 25, 2026, as reported by Polygon, subject to regional availability.

If your search is simply “when does the Backrooms movie come out,” May 29, 2026, is the answer for its U.S. theatrical release. For watching at home, use the digital or streaming date instead—and confirm that the film is listed in your country.
